Sterling Silver Powder Compact, 1948.
Square compact, engine-turned engraving to case, and a crown applied to the lid. British hallmarks for E.S & Co, which is E. Silver & Co, of 81 New Bond St., London. (Silverware manufactured by Mark Tyzack & Sons). The date mark is Birmingham, 1948. There is an inscription inside "To Paul from Bernard, 1st November 1952". Paul is short for Pauline, and it was a birthday present. The compact still has the original gauze filter and the lid contains a mirror. Item measures approx. 7 cm square, and 0.9 cm thick. Total weight (this includes the mirror) is 84.9g. Condition: there are a few depression marks, all shallow (where the case has been snapped shut with the fingers), and the mirror has been glued in at some stage, rather messily. This could be dissolved or gently scraped away. Overall it is a good-looking compact, and nicely made.
