Very nice sterling silver mug, hallmarked for London 1877. It has a glass bottom - originally this was supposed to expose the Queen's shilling, which if you accepted the mug of beer and didn't see the shilling, meant that you were then officially pressed into the Navy as you had accepted the payment. (To give a rough outline). Hence a prudent man drank out of a glass-bottomed mug, and checked for the coin before drinking. This is much later, and probably just a decorative feature. Conical shaped mug, engraved with such decorated initials that you can't read them. There's a J in there somewhere though. Remains of gilding to the interior. Maker is Richards & Brown - Edward Charles Brown. Mug measures 10.1 cm high with a top rim diameter of 6.9 cm and a bottom diameter of 7.3 cm. Excellent condition, good weight of silver with strong thick walls.
