Pair of  unusual candlesticks, made in porcelain and brass. They have portraits of a man on one, and a woman on the other. The vendor of these described them as Napoleon and Josephine - but this has to be wrong,as "Napoleon" is shown with blonde hair, blue eyes and a beard. Napoleon was famously clean shaven, had dark hair and brown eyes  - he was Corsican.  The couple on the candlesticks wear laurel crowns - they could be Roman, maybe an Emperor and his wife, or maybe Apollo and Daphne, Greek gods, as there are Greek Key designs in gold, to the navy blue porcelain. Candlesticks stand 23.5 cm high, and the base is 11 cm diameter. The brass is unpolished, with natural patination - but could be polished according to taste.  These are quite special candlesticks, and most probably European in origin, probably French. They would date from late 19th to early 20th century, maybe earlier, but the underneath of the base is a bit different to what one would expect.
