Pair of Staffordshire Dogs, Quill Holders.
19th century elegant Staffordshire hounds, reclining with paws crossed. They are a mirror image with quill holders mounted on the bases in front of the rear legs. (Quills - feather pens for writing). Hand painted, with the decorators mark underneath one.
Measurements: 16.5 cm long and 6.5 cm wide (bases). Condition: There are faults - one dog has a rejoined nose and cracks or joins in the neck area. The other has a hairline over the forehead area and a rejoined neck. Both have hairlines along neck to spine area. Damage to Staffordshire ware is very common, as they are earthenware and fired at a lower temperature than porcelain. Age, of course, is also a contributing factor. (Small children playing with the pretty doggies is probably also a factor….). Good to get a true pair of these, they are getting very hard to find. These would date from the very early 1800s, and wear their scars with grace.
