Cambrian Gaudy Welsh Tea Set, Early 1800s

  • NZ$7500

Typical colours in the Imari palette. This pretty 14 piece tea set has six cups and saucers, a teapot (damaged) and a slop bowl. Circa early 1800s. The saucers are 14 cm diameter, and the cups are 6 cm high at the handle, 5 cm high at the rim. They have 10 cm diameter bowls. The slop bowl is 7 cm high and 14 cm diameter. The teapot is 26 cm wide handle to spout, and 14 cm high to top of handle. The bowl of the pot is 16 cm diameter, and the whole sits on four little legs. Faults: The slop bowl has a heat mark in the bottom of the bowl, lighter heat marks to the sides and a hairline to the underside of the base only. The cups and saucers are all excellent except for a faint orange hairline under one saucer which does not show through to the top side. The teapot is for show only - it has one hairline on the flat top rim of the bowl, and another recent and serious crack from the rim, zigzagging to the handle. Base has old hairlines. Rim cracks are to one side only, so it presents well even if you can't use it.   Very decorative set, unusual to find gaudy Welsh of this age in New Zealand.
