Small Piece of Kauri Gum, Honey Colour.

  • NZ$8500

Unusual kauri-gum piece, lovely golden colour with central banding. Kauri gum is similar to amber, being the fossilised resin of the New Zealand kauri tree. It is younger than European amber though, but was also used for making jewellery and other ornamental items, as well as varnish. The Maori used it for, among other uses, starting fires (it burns well) and as an early version of chewing gum.
This piece measures 6 cm by 5 cm by 3.2 cm.   Weight 55g
