Gorgeous calling card case, dating from mid to late 1800s. Tortoiseshell outer cover with internal ivory edges. Cover is decorated with an inset sterling silver bird on a flower bush, with with a butterfly above it. The interior is navy blue silk moire fabric with the card holders being in royal blue with gilded edges. Item measures 10.7 cm by 7.7 cm, and 1.8 cm thick. Calling cards would need to be 8.8cm by 5.4 cm. Condition: Internally, very good condition, just one little tear in a card side. Externally, the silver bird's head has lifted from the base - it could probably be glued back in place. Wing tips are also in need of pressing back into the tortoiseshell - although these are not so noticeable. This is a very attractive antique item in good condition for the age. (So often the interiors of these cases have been destroyed).
