Metal framed photo locket brooch - the hinge and clasp date it to 1850 plus. It has the extra long metal prong of the clasp which was used as a sort of safety catch by threading this extra length into the garment.
This could be a mourning brooch. The metal has oxidised, giving a black effect. Pretty frame of open-work foliage scrolls. The photo is  sepia, and shows a man with a moustache. His dress could be late 19th century, or early 20th century. The photo shows traces of colour having been added to his cheeks and lips. The crystal is probably celluloid. You can change the photo by carefully folding back the metal tabs at the rear to release the locket from the frame. Item measures 3.5 cm by 2.7 cm wide. German in origin. Very good condition.
