Victorian Entreé Dish and Lid, Silver Plate.

  • NZ$19400

Antique entreé or vegetable serving dish with id and detachable handle. Silver plate with ornate pattern of applied flowers and foliage. Very large handle with acanthus scrolls. Large tureen style dish. The beauty of these dishes is that if you take the handle away, you can turn the lid upside down and use it for a second serving dish. Roast spuds in one and vegetables in the other perhaps. The handle swivels to detach. Item measures 36 cm long by 27 cm wide and about 16.5 cm high with lid and handle in place.  Honourable wear to the plate on the underneath of the base shows its genuine age. One small patch of wear inside the bottom half, and a few minor salts spots and a very shallow dent (almost unnoticeable) around the rest of the item. The handle has the two opposing ends curved upwards - considering that they are very sturdy plated metal I’m not sure how they would have got like that, but this is probably a fault, not a design. Beautiful dish, very elegant on a silver-set table. Stamped EPNS underneath, with a stamp of a squirrel with a nut, but no maker’s name. Late 1800s.
