Sterling Silver Buckle, Circa 1915.

Buckle with unusual patent to rear "Sterling. Pat. March 30 - 1915" and also the name "Stieff" stamped above this. Beautifully engraved scroll pattern to front, with also the initials "R D" in flowing script. The patent possibly applies to the hinged loop at one side, which would clamp the fabric of the belt when in the closed position. Buckle plate measures 2.8 cm by 4.4 cm. It is slightly curved. Some very old scratches to the front of the silver, otherwise sound and good. Could have been either a gentleman's belt buckle or a nurse's buckle.
