Set of 4 Camel China Cups, Saucers, Sugar, Signed.

  • NZ$24500

Early 20th century signed Japanese cups and saucers with sugar or slop bowl -  beautiful hand painted porcelain with scenes of camels in the Arabian desert. Fully gilded interiors, with gilded band to top of cups, and gilded handle. Signature is K. Asal or it might be K. Asai.  They are stamped underneath with a crown and “Camel China”, hand painted, Made in Japan. They look like the Noritake series of the same sort of design, but the mark is more akin to the Nagoya Sei Sho mark. They would date around 1920s-30s, and are probably export ware. One cup is faulted - there is no visible sign of a crack, but it rings cracked, and if you very gently squeeze the cup you can hear it. For display purposes, it looks perfect. Very good condition otherwise, and very glamorous set. Cups are 5.5 cm high and 5.9 cm diameter (not including handles). The saucers are 11.75 cm diameter. Sugar or slop bowl is 6.5 cm high and9.8 cm diameter. The sugar bowl has a different border to the rim than the cups, and the mark is a simple “hand painted” scroll with a gilder’s mark.
