Very pretty pair of sterling silver butterknives with mother of pearl handles and decorated silver caps. Carved finish to the mother of pearl, a pretty shape with curved caps. The blades themselves are shaped and decorated with engravings of acanthus scrolls. The blades are slightly scooped, to allow the butter to curl. There is more scroll decoration the the lower finial caps. Total length of each is 18 cm. They are hallmarked for Birmingham (UK) 1854, have the mark of the young Queen Victoria's head, and a maker's mark for George Unite, of Caroline Street, Birmingham, a well-known silversmith. One blade has a slight crease, nothing ugly, otherwise they are in excellent condition.
