Edward Noel Barraud was the son of Charles Decimus Barraud. A New Zealander, he painted under the name Noel Barraud, born in 1857 and died in 1920. He exhibited at the Canterbury Society of Arts 1895, 1896, 1897, 1899; the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts1883, 1884, 1885, 1886. etc., at the Otago Art Society, the Melbourne International Exhibition 1880 and the Colonial and Indian exhibition, London, 1886. among others. This painting is a charming monochrome scene of two open decked gaff-rigged sailing boats, other boats in distant background. It is signed Noel Barraud in the same colour as the grey sails. There is a faint title above the signature "French Fishing Boats in the Bay of Biscay". Art work measures 24 cm wide and 13.25 cm high. Framed item measures 43.5 cm wide and 34 cm high. There is a label from the original framers on the rear "William Dixon, Paint..... Royal Blue House. Palmerston N... Importer of all painter's requisites" (The label is torn in parts. It has a new backing and tape. Lovely scene, would benefit from maybe a brighter mount, also as there are some marks on this one. Some minor losses to the gold of the outer frame. A few small foxing stains, nothing too serious at this time. (The white mark seen in the sky on one of the images is a reflection off the glass).Really charming subject.
