Antique Victorian period mother-of pearl brooch, in the shape of a claw. It is mounted with end caps and the central Mizpah blessing in 9ct yellow gold. The word "Mizpah" is in applied 9ct rose gold. Brooch dates from the mid to late 1800s. It measures 5.4 cm wide, and is stamped 9C at the rear (for 9ct) and (ct at the side of the rear band. The Mizpah blessing reads "The Lord Watch between me and thee when we are absent one from the other".  This type of brooch was given by a soldier to his wife when he went off to war, or a husband or lover to his wife or paramour when they were to be apart. Such a beautiful sentiment.. Item is in very good condition.
