Sycamore & marquetry box of rectangular shape, hinged lid decorated with a scene of Venus seated in a swan chariot pulled by birds, enclosed by a scroll and foliate border. The floral borders are very attractive. Not sure what the other veneers are - could be burr walnut on the exterior, and possibly varnished oak inside. It has a brass lock, and wonder of wonders, it still has the key. Measures 12.5 cm high by 21.5 cm deep  and 30.5 cm wide. There are fill repairs to  the corners, some old splits to the clouds on which Venus and her chariot ride, same to tops of sides, but this is not a detraction from the impact of the box.  Inside is in excellent order. Most unusual item.
