Early Villeroy and Boch Lidded Large Tea Caddy.

  • NZ$47500

An unusual hexagonal lidded pot, ginger jar style — maybe a tea caddy — fashioned in a very Indian pattern with applied scrollwork, and stylised elephant heads around the neck. Made in pale chocolate-coloured unglazed jasperware or maybe terracotta, with applied pattern in a paler shade of coffee. Maker’s mark is for Villeroy & Boch, an impressed mark (much like the mark Wedgwood uses). It has the letter “L” also impressed.
This a very beautiful item, about 18.5 cm high and 10.5 cm wide at its widest point. It has a shallow chip along one corner underneath (since the material is the same colour right through, this doesn’t show). Otherwise excellent condition. Not sure of age, since it doesn't have the Mettlach mark, but all things Indian were popular in the mid 19th century. Also, around this time, V & B were making terracotta ware.
