Victorian Large Silver Sugar Castor, 1899.

  • NZ$35000

Very large English sterling silver sugar castor. Victorian period, hallmarked for Sheffield 1899, maker Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall. Octagonal baluster form on octagonal spreading foot.  Nice pierce work to the top with turned finial. Measures 21.5 cm high by 8 cm diameter. Condition: Foot is slightly bent (can be easily straightened by a silver smith if it bothers you),  two very minor shallow indentations, one to body and one to the pierced work. Also easily fixable, but hardly worth doing. The hallmarked is rubbed on the outside of the castor, but is clear inside the top's rim - please excuse the tarnish showing here in the photo. Overall, an excellent castor, very impressive and grand. TW: 177.9 grams.
