Gold Framed Francesco Bartolozzi Print.

  • NZ$12500

Oval framed print of an engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi after Cipriani, "Innocence Taught by Friendship" - depicting three little cherubs. The mount is reverse-painted black glass with a gold leaf band. This is a very old item, the framers, Bregazzi & Sons of Dublin, were active in the early 1800s to later 1800s. The original backing board has been removed probably to examine the image, but the framer's label has been carefully retained.  ltem measures 22 cm diameter by 19 cm high. The actual print is 12.8 cm by 94 cm.  It is the same size as the original by Bartolozzi, which was a stipple engraving.  (Since I'm not an Art Dealer, I'm not actually sure this is a stipple engraving or a print). The print is a little faded, having that sun-faded slightly blue tonings. Very good condition for the age, just a fine crackling in the gesso in one area and the image has moved a little in its mount. Ignore the shadows on the gold mount in the close-up - these are just the reflections of the photographer. Lovely item, very Georgian in the decorative sense.
