Small Victorian Rosewood Box, 1863.
Pretty little box, made in rosewood with its beautiful grain, and having a lift-out layer inside.The top has an inset mother-of-pearl initials plaque (nothing engraved there though). It measures 18.5 cm long, 11 cm deep and 7.75 cm high. Inside, it has a padded dark rose-coloured silk lining to the lid, with gold lettering “Remembrance”. There is a lift-out tray, lined in pink paper. The lower level of the box is also lined in pink paper. Underneath the tray is written in black ink: “Gertrude Isabel Woodfield. The gift of her sister Lizzie with fondest wishes and dearest love for her welfare both here and hereafter. November 1863.”
There is a brass lock still in place, although the mother-of-pearl escutcheon is missing. The box is in very good condition, except for a small splinter of the wood on the left side corner. There is no key, the box is unlocked.
