Silver Vesta Case, Gilded Interior, 1916.
Sterling silver Vesta or match safe (as the Americans call them). Pretty engraved decoration of acanthus scrolls, blank initial panel, and side O ring. These were once worn on a gentleman’s watch-fob chain - the cases were always metal, as Vesta wax matches tended to self-ignite when they rubbed together. Today they are often worn as lockets or pendants. This one has a slightly curved case (the better to fit against one’s body) and the striker is underneath. Measurements: 4 cm by 4 cm and 1 cm thick. Excellent condition, the lid spring is working well, and the hallmark is for Birmingham 1916. Maker’s mark is J.C. Ltd for John Collyer Ltd. TW: 22.6g.
