Set of Vintage Fish Knives and Forks

  • NZ$7400

Place settings for 6 - late 19th to very early 20th century fish set. Silver plated tines and blades, and celluloid handles. The handles are made to look as ivory, and are often mistakenly called bone-handled as a generic term, which they are usually not (bone-handled, that is).  Do NOT put these items into a dish-washer - the handles don’t take kindly to it and will discolour over time, and also they can separate from the metal, as the handles from this period are positioned using animal glue which dissolves in hot water. Wash them gently in luke-warm soapy water, holding them by the handles so that the handles don’t get submerged.
The blades have a lovely engraved pattern of flowers, leaves and scrolls. Knives are 20 cm long, and forks are 18 cm. Very good condition, with no discolouration to the handles or wear-through to the plate, just one bruise to the side of fork handle. The maker is Wingfield. (Wingfield Rowbotham & Co, of Sheffield, UK).
