Large Inlaid Sewing or Jewellery Box, Sandalwood.
Sandalwood box with unusual inlay parquetry work of geometric shapes with centre panel inlaid with a scene of two bare-footed bearers (possibly coolies) carrying a man wearing a panama hat, resting in a sort of full length palanquin.
Beautifully fitted interior - beautiful perfume from the internal sandalwood lining - has lift-out tray of little lidded compartments. This box has inlay work reminiscent possibly of the Dutch colonial South East Asia - and probably comes from Malaysia or Indonesia. The body of the box has warped some, probably when it left the humid climates of the East and came to the colder climate of New Zealand. You can see the results of this in the fit of the lid, which is somewhat askew. However, overall it is in amazingly good condition - no other damage at all, except one little knob on an internal lid needs reattaching. Box measures 10.5 cm high by 34.5 cm by 24 cm. Early 20th century.
