Victorian Walking Cane with Silver Collar Item number: 8836 Date: 1898 Price: NZ$78.00 Elegant and slim tapering walking cane – ebonised wood (possibly rosewood). Not a heavy cane, more decorative and elegant. Think Hercule Poirot. Has some scuffs to the finish (just age wear) and a few dents to the collar. Measures 87 cm long and the diameter tapers from 2 cm just under the handle to 1 cm at the tip. Handle is 5.65 cm wide. |

Acorn Thimble Holder, Mauchlinware Item number: 8455 Date:late 19th century Price: NZ$79.00 Thimble case with turned foot – Mauchlineware, the scene is Trafalgar Square. Measures 71 mm high and 29 mm diameter. Top screws off – there are signs of glue on the inside base – maybe there was once a small silk–covered pad on which the thimble sat. Underneath the foot is a small sticker saying “Patent No. 26392”. Condition is very sound – no splits or breaks, but the very top surface of the dome is a little dirty – probably the result of being displayed for years without a lot of dusting being done..... |

Very Large New Zealand Rimu Wooden Urn Item number: C3831 Date: 1980s Country of origin: New Zealand Price: NZ$1300.00 A beautiful piece — a large urn/vase made of turned New Zealand rimu wood. Made by Paul Beckett some 15 years ago, this piece is a tour de force of wood turning. It stands 58 cm high and is 35 cm wide at its widest point. The inside has also been hollowed out, and as a result, the vase is wonderfully light. Rimu has a rich red grain, and this piece looks right at home sitting on an antique cabinet or pedestal. It has a waxed finish. Many hours of patient work have gone into turning a piece this delicate and large. It is in very good condition — there is a straight crack on the base, but it is a closed one, and has always been there. |

Victorian Burr Walnut Writing Slope Item number: 0274 Date: 19th century Country of origin: New Zealand Price: NZ$890.00 A large, Victorian period, brass-bound, burr walnut writing box of oblong shape, with fitted interior, and drawer in the base. The interior is fitted with a set of three secret drawers, hidden behind a sprung panel. These have little fabric ribbon pull handles. The writing slope is leather-covered, with gold tooling. One original ink bottle, although the cap is a probably not original. The edges of the box are bound in bevelled brass, and there is a line of double fine brass stringing inside this on all sides. It has a brass lock and escutcheon plate, and also a brass presentation panel on the lid (unengraved). The box measures 45 cm wide, 27 cm deep and 21 cm high. The condition is basically sound — the top has a crack through the veneer across one corner (see photos of lid). There is a round veneer repair on one side (old), and various small bubbles, etc. The brass stringing has some lengths absent. Inside, the leather to the slope is split along the join of the two sections. There is chipping to the black veneer interior edges and the tag which pulls up the slope surface to access the interior of the box has been reglued. The spring to the hidden drawers is accessed by pulling up the partition next to the inkwell, and works extremely well. Basically, all wear is commensurate with the age of the box, and with use. It is a handsome item, and burr walnut is a very attractive finish. We have further photos available if you email us. |

Inside lid and lower part of box are covered in green silk. Inside is in very good condition. No key. Box measures 15.25 cm wide and 11.5 cm deep. It stands about 7.5 cm high. Victorian Leather Large Writing Box Item number: C9678 Date: late 19th century Price: NZ$900.00 Beautifully fitted with ivory ruler and two page turners or paper knives, this writing box is in very complete and excellent condition. Large size, it measures (closed) 16.5 cm high by 37 cm wide and 27 cm deep. It has a carry handle on the lid, engraved with the two initials C entwined. Box opens to reveal three white panels of what could be mica — cold and hard to the touch. On these you could write yourself notes, and clean them off when dealt with. (Two of these have cracks, but still very usable.) At the rear of these is a lift-out pen tray with further pen compartment underneath. One side of the pen tray has a square leather cased lift-out inkwell with a spring top (some corrosion to the lid interior of the actual bottle). The other side houses an identical case, but this is labelled “Light” and houses a striker for a match with a lid to the match keep underneath. There is a little brass mounted holder in which you could prop the lit match while you melted your wax for the seal on your letter. The lower base lid folds open for the writing slope, and underneath the slope are further compartments for letter storage, etc. The top lid has compartments for unused letterhead and envelopes. The back compartment houses a matching folder, probably for blotting paper and half-finished letters. There are three ivory implements housed here — one ruler, with the name of Parkins & Gotto of Oxford Street, London on it, one short page turner, and one large paperknife — probably to slit your newspapers open, as they used to be folded uncut. Beautiful item all round. |
