7383

Pair Sterling Silver Dressing or Tobacco Pots, Edwardian

Item number: 7383
Date:1905 and 1907
Price: NZ$365.00

Two sterling silver pots with sprung lids. Hallmarks on the larger pot are for Birmingham 1905, maker is H.W. Ld (for Henry Williamson Ltd) and on the smaller pot Birmingham 1907, maker D & F (Deakin & Francis). Both have a monogram of intertwined initials on the lid. The smaller pot is either B.A.C. or possibly A.B.C. The larger pot is C.L.C. or something similar – I find it very hard to decipher these entwined letters. “C” seems to be the surname here though. One possibly for powder, the other for some other unguent. They could be husband and wife – or brothers, since these could also be for a man’s pomade or for snuff or tobacco. Inside, they have both been gilded, although this is largely worn on the smaller pot. Largest measures 36 mm high and 88 mm diameter (about 1.1/2 inches by 3.1/2 inches). The smaller measures 29 mm high by 83 mm diameter (1.1/8 inches by 3.1/4 inches). Both in excellent condition, you squeeze the sides to open them. Weights are 95.93 grams for the larger pot, and 86.84 grams for the smaller pot.

C10947

Pressed Glass Pug Dog and Hat Match Striker or Inkwell

Item number: C10947
Date: late 19th to early 20th century
Price: NZ$165.00

Which is it? Looks like an inkwell to me, but its owner says Vesta striker and holder (that’s match safe and striker to Americans – vesta matches were the English wax matches that became a generic name). It does have a line of small balls around the base of the cushion the dog sits on, so these may be the striking areas for the match. Whatever it is, it is a lovely rendition in pressed and slightly frosted glass of a dog and a large hat – the dog has its mouth gripping the edge of the hat, and the whole is on a stand with four little legs, all in glass. The dog has a curled tail, and a pug face. Measurements: 9 cm high, 8.5 cm long and 6.5 cm wide. Excellent condition. No damage at all.

5512

European Silver Vesta Case or Match Safe

Item number: 5512
Date: 1910–1920
Price: NZ$120.00

Early 20th century vesta case. Sterling silver (.925). It carries hallmarks under the gilding on the inside of the lid lip, but they are tiny and very hard to decipher — I would think Austrian, or maybe Hungarian, and dating around 1910–1920. Weight is approx 15 grams. No suspension loop, so made for a pocket. Lovely shape, fits the hand beautifully. Engine turned engraving to body, and good sprung catch to lid. This little vesta has some shallow finger dents to the sides, and a deeper dent to the top edge — probably able to be straightened, otherwise very good. Blank presentation panel. Measures 50 cm by 25 cm and 12.5 cm thick.
