Victorian Staffordshire Flatback Group, Spill Vase Item number: C11737 Date: late 19th century Price: NZ$185.00 19th century Victorian Staffordshire flatback figurine of a lad and his lady – she holds a dove, and he holds a small bowl of what may be eggs. A well is between them and a tree stump, which is a spill vase for holding spills (tapers). Figurines of the flatback type were made to sit on a narrow mantelpiece ledge, and this one was for holding spills with which one could light a lamp or a pipe. (You ignited the spill or taper from the fire below in the grate). Group measures 25.5 cm high, 15.5 cm wide and 8 cm deep (10 inches by 6 inches by 3.1/8 inches). Tiny minor roughness to end of bird’s beak, otherwise in excellent condition. |

Matt glaze, not quite true bisque, but very similar — with no maker’s marks, and wear to the paint on the tail and body, where he has been handled over the years. Hand-painted eyes, and a black nose — the nose again having some wear to the paint. A large figurine, he measures approx 14.5 cm by 9.5 cm by 9 cm. His coat colour is pale brown, yellowish tones, with white and pinkish area on snout. No chips or cracks. |
