1850s Ridgways Rare Jug, Biblical Scene

Wonderful Victorian moulded ceramic jug by Ridgway – the scene is a rare biblical one of Moses striking the rock. Moses stands on the hill, with a stream flowing out of the rocks beside him, where his people (and a few sheep) eagerly scoop up and drink the water. Jug measures 21 cm high and 18 cm wide handle to spout (8.1/4 inches by just over 7 inches). Matt bisque effect to the outside, and glazed inside. Sage green colour. The fancy mark on the base reads “Published by E. Ridgway & Arington, Hanley. January 1st, 1853”. Staffordshire Potteries. One of the people’s noses is a little snub on one side, but this looks to be original. Excellent condition.

Three large jugs, Victorian majolica – the design is a tree stump with berry vine growing around it. Insides are a stone/olive green. Largest jug measures 21.5 cm high and 20 cm wide handle to spout. Smallest measures 16.5 cm high and 16 cm wide. Underneath, largest has the figures “17”, medium has the figures “15” and an embossed “H”. Smallest just has an embossed “T”. The medium jug has a chip to the lip, otherwise there is no damage to the set. Late 19th century Victorian period.

Victorian Child’s Teaset, 11 pieces

Part tea set, 11 pieces: 4 little cups, 2 saucers, 2 side plates, creamer, sugar and teapot. Child’s tea set, made by Samuel Alcock in the mid 1800s, in Staffordshire, England. Impressed maker’s mark on the saucers, and printed marks on the side plates, with the S.A entwined and the pattern name Byzantine. Pretty teal blue/green colour pattern.
Cups are 7 cm diameter and 4 cm high. Creamer is only 7 cm high. Teapot is 12 cm high, and 18.5 cm handle to spout. Condition: All cups are very good, with minor stains to one, and very minor pattern wear to another. Saucers have a chip each, and are a little age stained. Side plates are excellent, and teapot is excellent with just one ring stain inside. Creamer has one small, old chip and lidded sugar has a few very minor nibbles around inside rim, and is missing its finial. Rare to find this many pieces still surviving, and it’s a beautiful teapot!

Georgian Period Plate with Hand–painted Cow Scene

Pretty early 19th century Georgian period plate, with central hand-painted decoration of a rural scene with cows. The border of the plate is blue with dark blue-outlined circles. Gilded edge. The plate has no maker’s name — although there are some underglaze impressed marks on the back. Unfortunately, they are not readable. There appears to be a small repaired rim chip (visible at the rear of the plate, or at least some over-painting of the white porcelain can be seen). Condition is very good for the age of nearly 200 years old — there are a couple of tiny rim nibbles, a few knife marks to the central picture, and a minor hairline at the rear. Plate measures 24 cm diameter.

A Georgian period Davenport hunting jug, squat baluster shape, white with brick red top. Impressed marks for the 1805 to 1820 period. Embossed sides show the hound pack with a fox that they have run to ground, and the horses standing as their riders scramble over a fence to join the hounds. The jug measures 18 cm high and 23 cm wide handle to spout. In excellent condition — no chips or cracks — but there is some colour missing from the brick red painted top section.

A Georgian period teacup and saucer with polychrome transfer chinoiserie decoration of two Oriental ladies with a male figure carrying a bouquet: “who is going to get the bouquet?” Hand-painted highlight colours.
The backstamp is a D surrounded by decoration — probably the mark of Thomas Dimmock (Jnr) and Co, of the Staffordshire Potteries, England. The pottery operated from 1828 to 1859. This would have been made in the early period. The saucer is deeply dished with no indentation, and measures 14 cm diameter and 2.8 cm high. The cup is 5.5 cm high and is 9 cm diameter at the top. In very good condition.

A 19th century Staffordshire copper lustre teapot with simple decoration in blue, white and yellow enamels of stylised flowers. It has a flower-shaped finial to the lid, ornate body detailing to the handle and spout, and sits on four little feet. This is a good teapot for use or display — it has one small chip to the edge of the lid. However, it appears to have had some restoration to the lid and top of spout. (You can see a somewhat duller finish in the lustre here in the photos of those areas.) Teapot measures 26 cm x 18 cm x 13 cm. A pretty piece.

Floral pattern Davenport cup and saucer — pattern is “Shiraz”. The mark is for 1844.
The saucer is deeply dished as was the style at the time, and is in excellent condition — there is a slice off the underneath foot rim (see photo of saucer rear), but this is minor. The cup is also very good, having no cracks or chips. It does have a bruise under the foot rim underneath, and the inside of the cup bottom has crazing. Very pretty example of mid 19th century English pottery.

A large olive green Victorian period sugar bowl or honey pot with silver plated lid — it has a matt glaze central band with a Dutch scene of windmill background with a goose girl and her flock — the girl and flock have raised enamel detail. Rims and edges are gilded. The backstamp is for Taylor Tunnicliffe of Hanley in the Staffordshire potteries, and dates this to the 1890s. Excellent condition. Bowl measures about 11 cm to the top of the lid finial, and is 9 cm in diameter.

Lovely colours of iron red and blue in this 19th century cup and saucer. Staffordshire lustre ware, or could be Gaudy Welsh, with the copper lustre band around the rims, and copper lustre highlights to the blue leaf scrolls. All hand-painted. Cup is slightly lobed to the body, and saucer is dished. Saucer measures 14.4 cm diameter by 2.75 cm high. The cup is 6 cm high and 8.8 cm diameter. Lovely old slightly impure china — two very very fine tight hairlines, one is tiny. You can see them mostly only if you place a light inside the cup. Great display piece.

Small bowl with silver plated rim, with the dark green matt background and applied enamel decoration of the Dutch series from Taylor Tunnicliffe. Carries their backstamp for the earlier period circa 1875 plus.
Little bowl measures 4.8 cm high and 6.1 cm diameter. There is some wear to the plating, but the bowl is in very good condition.

Lovely little jug, with decoration of gilded grape vines and bunches of grapes. Measures 10 cm high and 15 cm wide handle to spout. Some wear to the gilding, but otherwise no damage at all. Mid 19th century. No maker’s marks, just a few printed pink figures (7 over 881) and impressed scratched X mark.

Unmarked — no maker’s name. In very good condition, with no chips or cracks. Cup measures 10 cm handle to rim, and stands 6.6 cm high. Saucer is 14.5 cm diameter.
