Tortoiseshell and Silver Regimental Sweetheart Brooch

Item number: 8819

Price: NZ$105.00

WWI regimental sweetheart brooch, made in tortoiseshell with sterling silver crest and surround, hallmarked for London 1916. Measures 27.5 mm diameter. Maker’s mark is rubbed, but appears to be C Bros. “Patent” stamped on silver also. The crest could be the regimental guidon of 1st Dragoon Guards containing the cipher of George III – it has the crown surmounting the garter, and the British motto “Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense” on the garter, and the king’s cipher in the centre. This was used on the first early guidons of the regiment, and I can’t find any other regiment this would apply to - although various new regiments were formed for the war, and disbanded afterwards. (We have another of these tortoiseshell and silver regimental brooches in stock, but it has the crest of the 16th County of London Regiment). Very good condition. Sweetheart brooches were given to the wives or sweethearts of a soldier – especially when he was going off to war – in this case WWI.

Vintage Kauri Gum Bracelet

Item number: 8008
Date: see description
Price: NZ$140.00

Old kauri gum – panels of it strung together in an elasticised bracelet. New Zealand kauri gum is the fossilised resin of the ancient native New Zealand kauri trees. This is the New Zealand version of amber, but most of it is not as old as genuine European amber. This bracelet would have been made early 20th century – the gum is hundreds of thousands of years old. It measures 40 mm high and the panels are approx. 7.5 mm thick. Very good condition – very natural crackled finish. The elastic is old, but although parts of it are worn, it is still doing its job well. If it broke, it is an easy restring with new hat elastic. If you wanted a higher shine to the amber (it’s currently matt), a jeweller could probably buff it up. Quaint piece of NZ history.

Roman Gold Earring

Item number: 7469
Date: 1st century AD
Price: NZ$295.00

First century AD Roman gold earring — this dainty little hoop would have been worn through the ear, but now there is a tiny ring around the back hoop which is suspended from a stud and butterfly fitting so you can wear it. The item is made in yellow gold, very thin on the face area, with shaped sides. It measures about 1.2 cm diameter. The face area has two little tears and some loss on one side edge. But look at the age! Found in England.
