Carved African or Pacific Bowl – Kava Bowl

Four legged bowl with beautiful incised decoration to inside of bowl – possibly a kava bowl from the Pacific islands. Could also be African. Measures 35.5 cm diameter and 11.5 cm high (13.3/4 inches by 4.1/2 inches). Conical shape, one piece of wood. Dark stained wood, rosewood colour. Not old, but beautifully made. Excellent condition.

Maori Queen, Te Atairangikaahu, Vintage Christmas Card, signed

Greeting card sent by the Maori queen of New Zealand, Dame Te Atairangikaahu (who died in August 2006). Plain cream card with gold coat of arms on the front, a greetings wish in Maori on one side of the interior, and a greetings wish in English on the other. Handwritten brief message, signed Te Ata (an abbreviation of her full name). Card measures 18 cm by 11.5 cm (7 inches by 4.1/2 inches). Probably dates from 1960s–70s. Very good condition.

Beautiful work in this 1960’s Pacific Island bag – hand made, woven with contrasting pattern, flower motif. Well–fitted lid with bobble clasp. Bent cane handles. Lined with another skin of woven cane. You don’t see craftswork of this standard any longer. Measures 36.5 cm high, 29 cm wide and 11 cm deep (14.3.8 inches by 11.1/2 inches by 4.3/8 inches). Excellent condition, a high quality piece of work. Not sure if from Samoa, Cook Islands/Raratonga, or Tonga, but from one of these.

Circa 1960s Pacific Islands craft – a tote bag woven with applied floral design to sides. Plaited handle. Lined with plain tapa cloth (beaten bark). Excellent workmanship. This is a dying craft. Measures 33 cm high with handles, 33 cm wide and 13.5 cm deep (13 inches by 13 inches by 5.3/8 inches). Excellent condition. From either Cook Islands/Raratonga, Tonga or Samoa.

Very well made 1960s Island craft bag – woven in a faint blue colour with lemon trim. Fitted lid with bobble and loop clasp. Measures 17.5 cm high no including handles, 28 cm wide and 18 cm deep (7 inches by 11 inches by 7 inches). Very good condition, just a discolouration to one handle. Possibly synthetic raffia? From either Cook Islands/Raratonga, Tonga or Samoa.

New Zealand Jade Maori Toki Pendant

New Zealand nephrite jade pendant (called greenstone by the maori people of NZ, to whom it is a revered stone) – it is carved in the form of a Maori toki, or adze (axe). It symbolises building life and friendships. The top is bound, and the whole is on a plaited waxed twine cord. We have several of these, and as they are all hand carved, they vary a little in size and colour. The one shown is representative. It measures 4.5 cm by 2.5 cm (just over 1.3/4 inches by 1 inch). The cord is adjustable.

Old Indonesian Card Puppet, Very Intricate

Beautiful old puppet, cut card from Indonesia. Painted with intricate design in golds and reds etc. over very intricate lace cutwork. Very detailed face is also cutwork. Elegant hands. The holding stick and supports appear to be horn and wood. Puppet measures 50 cm high, with the centre stick being another 20 cm longer. Excellent condition.

Large Vintage Indonesian Card Puppet

Beautifully detailed large Indonesian puppet, made out of card, supported by turned horn sticks and rods. You can animate the hands and arms etc., using the sticks. The hands are very graceful and expressive, the body is gold–painted and has cutwork decoration and beautiful intricate painting. The hair is curly, and this effect is achieved by delicate cut work. Puppet is one dimensional, and measures 45.5 cm high, not including the hand poles, so about 65 cm all up. There is one hand animator pole missing, and a break in the central support rod behind the body. To use as a puppet, these would need repair, but to use as decoration, it’s superb.

Maori Carved Part Walking Stick

Part of an old walking stick, carved with Maori motifs of standing figures, but also a lizard with stone eyes (one stone missing). The word “Nakah” or it may be Makah are carved on one side, and “Hewaka” on the other. Light wood, possibly pine or kauri, but now dark stained. Stain is coming off, and there are a few small white paint spatters. Stick is broken off 3/4 way down, the end having the remains of a dowel and some glue. It measures 64.5 cm long. Diameter on stem is about 3 cm. Interesting old piece, possibly folk–art early 20th century.

Signed panel – poker work on box wood – portrait of a young African. Excellent detail, a really talented work, dating from circa 1920. The signature on the bottom is M.B. Panel measures 46 cm by 14.5 cm. Very good condition. A few minor scratches commensurate with age, but nothing ugly or serious. Very evocative work.

Sino–Tibetan Silver and Cornelian Flint Burner

An unusual belt ornament, Sino–Tibetan in origin. It is made in silver, with a cornelian bead at the lower end. The shape is like a vase, with handles and pierced–work decoration of a bird in foliage on one side, and possibly a rat in a grape vine on the other. Bottom pulls out to reveal a tube with blackened metal wadding or flint in it. Suspended on a chain with a large hook to loop over a belt. Very nice work, with unusual decoration. The urn and ball bead measure 9 cm in length, and the suspension chain is another 11.5 cm including the hook. Excellent condition.
