Vegetable Ivory Pill Box, Victorian Item number: c11777 Date: mid to late 19th century Price: NZ$98.00 Carved vegetable ivory pill box, beautifully polished and decorated on the sides with leaves. Vegetable ivory is carved from the dried, hardened gelatin of a large nut – usually coquilla or corozo (palm tree nuts). It was used extensively in the late 19th century for carving thimble holders, pill boxes, and for making buttons – button making continues today. This beautiful little box has a screw–on lid with a carved spiked edge, making it easier to open. It measures 23 mm high and 32 mm diameter (7/8 inch by 1.1/4 inches). It has what appears to be an ink stain on one side, otherwise excellent condition. |

Calling Card Case, Mother of Pearl Item number: C5519 Date: late 19th century Price: NZ$420.00 A Victorian period calling card case — made from mother of pearl with a silver insert presentation panel (not yet engraved with anyone’s initials) and ivory inside edges. Still in its original presentation box — beautiful Morocco leather with a crimson silk interior — it’s rare to find a case still with its box. The card case itself has a purple/blue silk interior, with two pockets of blue card. Once this case would have had a concertina style interior of blue card pockets, but it is all missing except the end two. However, this means that the case can now be used for business cards (our cards are so much bigger than the original calling cards that the old fittings are too small for today’s use). Card case measures 11 cm by 7.75 cm by 1.5 cm thick. Excellent condition, except for the inside previously described. Clasp is good and strong. |
