Vintage Brass Binnacle

Small vintage ship’s binnacle in gimbal frame. As well as N,W, E and S, it has Japanese or Chinese figured equivalents. Brass body and frame, oil filled. Works well, but has bubbles in the oil so needs a top–up. Screw heads in top surface are probably the way in. Measures 92 mm diameter and 32.5 mm deep. No maker’s names. Looks about WWII period.

Large Bronze Spigot, Sprinkler Head

Victory brand, large heavy bronze spigot. The screw part faces down, rather than at the end of the tube, and the head of the spigot has a pattern of perforated holes around it. No hole at the very end. Whole item measures 21.5 cm long and 11.5 cm high (8.1/2 inches by 4.1/2 inches). Excellent condition, just dusty.

Solid copper lidded jug by well–known and sought after English maker, J.S. & Sons (Joseph Sankey & Sons). Arts and Crafts style with beaten Art Nouveau motifs to the sides. Hammered central lid panel. The lid has become detached at the hinge, and there are a few shallow dents, including one to the footrim. Nice jug though, would look great with flowers. Measures 20 cm high and the base is 13 cm diameter (8 inches and 5.1/8 inches). Very attractive. Shown here uncleaned. Would polish up well if needed.

This is apparently Benjamin Beale, who in 1753 invented the Bathing Machine on wheels, for invalids at the seaside. Measures 91 mm high and 60 mm wide (3.5/8 inches by 2.3/8 inches). Excellent condition. Early half of 20th century. British.

Not for Europe or the States without rewiring.

Bronze Tray, Made from a Wedding Invitation Plate

A little 14.5 cm by 11 cm Tiffany bronze tray — it is made from the original printing plate for a wedding invitation (an engraved invitation). As the writing is reversed for printing, if you put the copper to a mirror it reads “Lieutenant and Mrs Frank Roberts Mead have the honour of announcing the marriage of their daughter, Barbara Cook to Major John Goodman Hodges, Royal Army Service Corps, Tuesday, the twenty sixth of June, One thousand, nineteen hundred and forty five. Holy Trinity Church, London, England.” A June wedding in 1945.
The tray has a maker’s mark stamped under the rim “Tiffany & Co., Makers, Bronze.w.”
Needs a polish, but in excellent condition. A lovely memento.

Wouldn’t these look good on a long dining table! Brass candlesticks with octagonal bases, and cotton reel stems — unusually, three in this set. They each measure 24.5 cm high and 9.5 cm diameter at the base. They have felt underneath, so would date early to mid 20th century. Condition is very good — there is a little minor unevenness to the top drip catchers, and the felt underneath is speckly on one. They could good do with a good polish also.

Brass and Iron Early Fender Trivet Stand

A 19th century trivet stand, made of iron with a shaped brass top — designed to slot over the iron fender of a Victorian or Georgian fire grate, it was for keeping pots or kettles warm near the fire. It has a wooden (oak) handle so it could be picked up without burning the hand. Measures 36 cm long including the handle, and 17 cm wide at its widest point. It is 13 cm high. Basically in very good condition, with a chip off the wooden handle (actually it is charred away). The iron base is a bit rough feeling, but is solid and complete, with hammered rivet construction A lovely item from the days of tea in front of the fire.

Heavy old weight — possibly a counterweight for something, or an individual weight for a hanging on a scales arm. I think it is lead internally. Outside is either brass or bronze. Weight measures 9.3 cm high and about 6 .7 cm diameter. The hook attached is a further 7 cm long. Very good original vintage condition — nicely used with rough underneath. Slightly out of round. Quaint item. Would make a great small doorstop. Weighs about 1.4 kg.

Copper Crested Dish, Italian

Unknown object — looks like a sort of chafing dish, but has no liner. It is similiar to those pots that hotels used to use to clear away cigar/cigarette ash. It is made in copper, with three brass paw feet, and a further brass paw which acts as an opener for the lid. There is a screw-in fitting to the rear, presumably where a handle was fitted.
The hinged lid has a gadrooned edge, and the lid of the dish has a crest engraved into the surface. Two eagles with lion’s bodies flanking and supporting a crowned shield. Underneath is stamped “Made in Italy”.
Item measures 16 cm diameter and about 6.5 cm high (not including the paw lid opener). Basically in very good condition — a bit dirty.
