New Zealand Jade Maori Toki Pendant Item number: 8391 Date: contemporary Price: NZ$70.00 New Zealand nephrite jade pendant (called greenstone by the maori people of NZ, to whom it is a revered stone) – it is carved in the form of a Maori toki, or adze (axe). It symbolises building life and friendships. The top is bound, and the whole is on a plaited waxed twine cord. We have several of these, and as they are all hand carved, they vary a little in size and colour. The one shown is representative. It measures 4.5 cm by 2.5 cm (just over 1.3/4 inches by 1 inch). The cord is adjustable. |

Sino–Tibetan Silver and Cornelian Flint Burner Item number: C9076 Date: early 20th century? Price: NZ$185.00 An unusual belt ornament, Sino–Tibetan in origin. It is made in silver, with a cornelian bead at the lower end. The shape is like a vase, with handles and pierced-work decoration of a bird in foliage on one side, and possibly a rat in a grape vine on the other. Bottom pulls out to reveal a tube with blackened metal wadding or flint in it. Suspended on a chain with a large hook to loop over a belt. Very nice work, with unusual decoration. The urn and ball bead measure 9 cm in length, and the suspension chain is another 11.5 cm including the hook. Excellent condition. |
