Black Slate and Marble Clock, English Item number: C11049 Date: late 19th century Price: NZ$600.00 Very nice late Victorian black slate and green marble mantel clock. Made by the British United Clock Co Ltd, Birmingham, England. It has the pretty enamel face that all B.U.C. clocks seem to have, with gilded metal outer ring. The slate has an engraved flower design to the corners of the case, with green marble side pillar detailing. Hinged door to rear. Clock measures 28.5 cm high, 22.5 cm wide and 13.3 cm deep. It has a few areas of damage to the case: there is a chip diagonally across the rear top right–hand corner, and a shallow chip to the top edge of the same side. Also a chip to the underneath foot edge rear of side. Have not had this clock overhauled but it appears to be working well, and has ticked away all week. It’s an 8 day movement, and appears to run for longer than that. However, it badly needs regulating as it runs slow and the chime is out of sequence. I will have it looked at, but in the meantime it is for sale as above. It chimes the hour and the half hour. All together, a very good clock. Comes with pendulum and key. Very heavy! |

Ornate Bracket or Mantel Clock, Victorian Item number: C8819 Date: 1892 to 1893 Country of origin: England Price: NZ$285.00 Very attractive late 19th century clock. It has the initials BU C Co on a tiny shield on the dial: British United Clock Co, and there are registration numbers hidden in the metal which can date it – Rd 190187 (1892-1893). The founders of the BUC Co once worked for Ansonia, and so this clock has some definite Ansonia overtones. It’s one of those clocks that looks a lot posher than it is – the case is oak (and needs some minor work to restore it to its best) and the ornamentation is all gilded base metal. The dial is brass and enamel, and very attractive. Classical style with cupids, musical instruments and lion’s mask. Turn it round to the rear, and there is a tin cover to the movement. The movement has probably been replaced, as a lot of the slots and holes on the tin cover no longer fit what is now there. Any replacement would have done many years ago. Clock runs well, but gains some minutes per day. Measures 29 cm high, 23 cm wide and 10 cm deep. Very good condition. |

Art Deco Mantel Clock Item number: C10566 Date: 1920s–30s Country of origin: England Price: NZ$250.00 1920s–30s mantel clock with Art Deco trim to the lower section of the case, and squared shoulders. The wood is Sapele Mahogany. Maker is Enfield, England. Has its key and pendulum, and chimes the half hours and hours. Overhauled by clock maker. Good sturdy movement. Measures 21.5 cm high and 26.5 cm wide. Very good condition. The only slight fault is the door to the clock face is difficult to click closed, as there is some flattening of the metal here. It requires a knack. Runs very well. |

1930s Mantel Clock, Large, Chimes Item number: C10565 Date: 1930s Country of origin: England Price: NZ$250.00 Large oak–cased 1930s mantel clock. The maker is Enfield, England, and the movement has been overhauled by a clock restorer. It has a pendulum and key, and it chimes the half hours and hours. Silvered chapter dial. A few very minor marks on the case, otherwide externally excellent. Measures 23.5 cm high and 36 cm wide. This clock is fussy about its level, and won’t go if it’s not quite the right level. |

Sterling Silver Elgin Pocket or Fob Watch Item number: 9114 Date: circa 1914 Price: NZ$198.00 Very classic Elgin sterling silver pocket watch – stem wind, double opening back, and unusual sprung outer silver bezel that covers the smaller glass/silver bezel over the watch face. The case is American sterling silver with import marks for Chester, England, 1914. Details: The watch is 51.5 mm in diameter, the back casing is hallmarked Keystone Watchcase Sterling U.S.A. and has Chester import marks for 1914, maker MAH for Max Alfred Holland. It is numbered 4519076. The movement is marked Elgin Natl watch Co. U.S.A., SEVEN JEWELS and numbered 18452779. It weighs 99.9 grams and the back casing has engine turned decoration that is rubbed. The white enamel dial is in good condition showing no damage or restorations. The original hands appear to be present. It has a seconds subsidiary dial. There are some marks in the silver, where previous owners have tried to open the case without the correct tools. Currently the watch only runs for a few seconds before stopping, but I will be having it repaired. The price here is for the watch as it is now, as is, where is. |
