C12447

Minature Watercolour of Gentleman, Circa 1820s

Item number: C12447
Date: circa 1820s
Price: NZ$425.00

George IV period framed miniature of a man with black jacket and high white neck cloth. Nicely observed profile portrait. Black wooden frame with brass acorn mount to hanging ring. The rear of the picture says “Edward H.......wood (part obliterated by a water stain) 1824". The old paper backing has been punctured below this, and the handwritten date 1824 is visible, along with a printed business paper which shows just the surname “Herve” with an accute accent on the e. Also “...portrait and Profile Painter, Cheapside, London”. Framed measures 14.5 cm by 12.25 cm (5.3/4 inches by 4.3/4 inches). The actual portait oval is 9 cm by 7.5 cm (3.1/2 inches by 3 inches). Condition: The black wood of the frame has some dotting to the finish, probably insect dirt. The rear has signs of insect damage to the brown paper backing. Inside the glass is a little hazy, but the painting appears to be in excellent condition. This is the companion to the woman’s miniature we have also in this category (our stock number C12446).

0347

Watercolour, Classic Scene of Women Sewing

Item number: 0347
Date: unkown
Price: NZ$185.00

This may have been copied from an Old Master — the scene is a sewing circle of women, all intent on their work. The central woman is posed almost as if she was the Virgin Mary — and maybe she is. Very classic in style, with beautiful detail to the faces. This is a very old watercolour, and there are some signs of insect damage to the surface, mainly to the left corners and bottom area — has been in storage for many years. Could be touched up easily. Painting in frame measures 43 cm by 64 cm.
Frame has damage and losses, but this painting would be better in another frame anyway, with a good matt to enhance it.

8989

19th Century Miniature in Velvet Frame

Item number: 8989
Date: late 19th century
Country of origin: United Kingdom
Price: NZ$350.00

A 19th century Victorian-period oval miniature of a woman — watercolour painted on card (I think) — could be oil, as there is a faint crackle glazing to the surface, indicating some form of thin varnish. The painting is mounted under glass in an oval brass surround set in purple velvet. This is then enclosed in a velvet hinged case. Case and mount generally in very good condition — there is a mark on the inside left fabric, and some general minor age wear.
The painting has a few minor foxing spots — one to the nose, one to the left cheek — but is in good condition otherwise. The woman has a black hat or mob cap on her head, with brown hair peeping out from under it. She is wearing black dress — mourning? Whole outer case measures 12 cm by 10 cm.

C10289

Handpainted Portrait, Victorian

Item number: C10289
Date: 19th century
Price: NZ$185.00

19th century hand painted portrait. Really a large portrait miniature. It measures 25 cm by 19.5 cm framed (9.3/4 inches by 7.3/4 inches). Watercolour. Interesting study — whereas the face is very well painted and a very sensitive rendition, the clothing is rather crude in comparison. The gold mount is showing signs of green tarnish, and there are two scratches in the glass in one corner. The frame has a silver gilded beading around the portrait and mount, and all is encased in burgundy morocco leather (which has some wear on the front edges). It has a top-mounted hanging ring, and the rear carries a gold embossed stamp Mr Herbert Watkins, 179 Regent Street. Whether Mr Watkins is the framer, the artist, or the subject I have no idea. Overall very good condition.
